The team from the 1st General Upper Secondary School of Chios created a card game, similar to UNO. The cards feature fish that live in the Aegean Sea.
Aim
To increase students’ awareness of Mediterranean fish species and highlight the importance of minimum allowable catch sizes as a key measure for protecting fish populations and ensuring sustainable fishing practices.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Identify common fish species found in the Mediterranean Sea (around Chios).
- Explain what the minimum legal catch size means and why it exists.
- Compare fish species based on size and fishing regulations.
- Make informed choices about seafood consumption.
- Develop respect for marine biodiversity.
- Promote responsible consumption and sustainability.
- Understand that individual actions affect the sea and local communities.
This study plan aims to increase students’ environmental awareness and civic responsibility. Through an UNO-inspired card game centered on Mediterranean fish species, students explore local marine biodiversity and become familiar with fish commonly found in the Aegean Sea. At the same time, they learn about minimum legal catch sizes (displayed on each card) and their significance. Throughout the game, students also discover that some fish do not have officially established minimum legal catch sizes, highlighting gaps in official fisheries regulations.
A follow-up activity will be an in-class simulation of commercial fishing practices, helping students realize and reflect on the effects of fishing pressure on long-term stock sustainability.
Overall, these activities aim to strengthen students’ environmental awareness, build knowledge of sustainable fishing practices, and promote responsible consumption.
